What is a Motor Control Center MCC?

Power distribution networks in larger industrial and commercial settings are highly intricate and use a combination of switchboards, switchgear, panel boards and transformers. The most basic form of control for AC motors involves switching them on and off.

Motor Starter

A motor starter, consisting of an overload relay and a contactor, is typically used to control the starting and stopping of an electric motor. The overload relay protects the motor from damage due to excessive current, while the contactor provides a means for connecting or disconnecting the motor from the power supply. By incorporating these two components, the motor starter ensures safe and reliable operation of the motor, while allowing for convenient and easy control of its operation.

A Motor Control Center Panel (MCC Panel)

MCC panels offer a centralized management solution for electric motors, providing an organized method of starting/stopping motors and offering fault protection to the operator. They comprise a combination of electronic components, including motor starters, circuit breakers, and overload relays, among other components.

MCC panels can be customized for different applications, and their main role is to simplify motor management while also improving system safety and reliability. They have become an essential component of modern manufacturing and processing facilities, optimizing the control of motors and reducing equipment downtime.

They are typically composed of several enclosed sections that have shared bus bars. These sections contain various control and indication devices, such as power contactors, protection relays, isolators, and others. The bus bars allow for easy distribution of power within the centre, while the multiple sections allow for better organization and maintenance of the various components. Overall, motor control centres provide a central location for managing and controlling the motors in a facility.

Motor control centers (MCCs) are equipped with a variety of control systems to ensure safe and effective operation. Manual buttons allow operators to control individual motors or groups of motors, while safety relays and interlock switches prevent accidental start-ups or other hazardous conditions.

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) also play a key role in MCCs, providing advanced control capabilities and allowing for remote monitoring and management. Together, these components help ensure that MCCs operate safely and efficiently, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.
